Gun Amnesty Program

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) is committed to reducing gun-related violence and enhancing public safety through the Gun Amnesty Program. This initiative offers residents a secure and anonymous way to dispose of unwanted firearms, regardless of their type, make, model, caliber, or condition; ensuring they don’t fall into the wrong hands.

Why We Created the Program

Gun violence affects communities everywhere, and reducing access to unwanted firearms is one way to make a meaningful impact. The Gun Amnesty Program promotes collaboration between law enforcement and local organizations, reflecting a shared commitment to public safety. Together, we aim to create a safer Kalamazoo for everyone.

How It Works

  1. Prepare the Firearm: Before visiting a drop-off location, residents must place the firearm in a bag or wrap it in a towel to ensure safe handling.
  2. Schedule a Drop-off: Contact one of the participating locations to set an appointment.
  3. Secure the Firearm: At the appointment, the firearm is placed into a secure case provided by the location, and staff will lock it to ensure proper handling.
  4. Firearm Collection: KDPS is immediately notified, and an officer retrieves the secured firearm for documentation and safe disposal at KDPS Headquarters.
  5. Anonymous Process: As a reminder, at no point during this process will any identifying information be requested from the individual surrendering the firearm.

This program underscores KDPS’s commitment to working hand-in-hand with the community to make Kalamazoo a safer place to live. Together, we are taking proactive steps to reduce gun violence and protect our residents.
