Second Conviction in 2024 West Main Shooting

A second Kalamazoo man has been convicted in connection with a 2024 shooting that injured four people.
On December 3, 2024, at approximately 5:19 p.m., Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) officers were dispatched to the 4200 block of West Main St. for a report of shots fired. The first responding officers found three people suffering from gunshot wounds and a fourth person injured by shrapnel.
Through an extensive investigation involving digital evidence, ballistic analysis, and forensic evidence, detectives identified Javion Jamar Jackson and Dominique Daurye Motton as suspects in the shooting. Both suspects were later arrested and charged.
On February 4, 2026, a jury convicted Jackson on multiple charges. He was later sentenced to 22 to 40 years in prison.
On July 7, 2026, Motton pleaded guilty to multiple charges. As part of his plea agreement, all remaining charges against him were dismissed.
Today, Judge Paul J. Bridenstine sentenced Motton as follows:
- Assault with Intent to Murder (3 counts): 16–40 years
- Felony Firearm: 2 years
- Assault Less Than Murder: 5–15 years
- Firearm Possession by a Prohibited Person: 2–7 years
- Tampering with Evidence: 5–15 years
"Today's sentence demonstrates that gun violence carries severe consequences and that those who commit these crimes will be held accountable," said Captain Danielle Guilds of the Criminal Investigations Division. "Jackson and Motton will spend decades in prison because of their decision to use gun violence."
