KDPS Investigating Four Shootings Over Holiday Weekend
Published on July 05, 2025
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) is actively investigating four separate shootings that occurred between the evening of July 4 and the early morning hours of July 5, including one incident that resulted in a fatality.
The first incident occurred at approximately 10:50 p.m. on July 4 in the 1300 block of Krom Street. Officers located two victims suffering from gunshot wounds at the scene: a 15-year-old male in critical condition and a 41-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to the ankle. A third victim, a 23-year-old male, later arrived at a nearby hospital with a similar injury. Multiple types of shell casings were recovered, suggesting more than one firearm was used.
At 12:18 a.m. on July 5, a 28-year-old man reported being struck in the arm by what appeared to be a stray bullet while attending a bonfire in the 1400 block of Center Street. He is in stable condition and stated he was unaware he had been shot until he arrived at a nearby hospital.
A third shooting was reported at approximately 3:00 a.m. in the 1200 block of W. Paterson Street. Officers monitoring a large crowd heard gunfire and responded immediately. A 34-year-old man was found on scene and later pronounced deceased. Two other men, ages 29 and 23, sustained gunshot wounds to their legs. At least one firearm was recovered, and investigators believe multiple weapons were discharged during the incident.
The fourth shooting occurred just after 4:00 a.m. in the 800 block of Woodward Avenue. Officers responded to a report of shots fired at a residence and located an abandoned vehicle nearby with bullet damage. A 17-year-old later arrived at a nearby hospital with a gunshot wound to the wrist. Evidence recovered suggests there was an exchange of gunfire involving at least two weapons.
No suspects are in custody at this time, and all four cases remain under investigation by the KDPS Criminal Investigations Division.
In response to the surge in violence, KDPS has reassigned additional officers to support these investigations and maintain public safety throughout the weekend.
“This level of gun violence is unacceptable,” said Chief David Boysen. “Our investigators are working around the clock to hold those responsible accountable. We’re asking residents to let us do that work, without adding more danger to our streets through retaliation”.
Chief Boysen emphasized that while these incidents are deeply concerning, residents can expect to see an increased police presence in the coming days as the department works to hold those responsible accountable and prevent further violence.
