Published on January 13, 2025

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) responded to three fires on January 12, 2025, including a fire in the 2800 block of S Burdick Street that resulted in a fatality and a rescue.

At approximately 7:22 PM, crews were dispatched to the S Burdick Street fire after reports of visible smoke and alarms sounding. Upon arrival, encountered heavy smoke from the second floor of a multi-family dwelling. A KDPS sergeant observed a resident attempting to escape through a second-floor window and assisted them to safety. Tragically, a 79-year-old woman was found deceased inside the residence during fire suppression efforts. The fire was brought under control by 8:05 PM, with assistance from Comstock Township Fire Department and Kalamazoo Township Fire Department (KTFD).

Investigators determined the fire was caused by cooking-related activity. Footage of the rescue will be made available at the time of this news release, alongside photos of fire/rescue efforts at this fire.

Earlier in the evening, KDPS responded to:

  • 800 block of E Walnut Street: Fire dispatch was received at 4:50 PM for an apartment fire. Crews rescued one individual, who had barricaded himself inside. Investigators were able to determine that the fire was started by the tenant that was rescued. The fire was brought under control by 7:41 PM, with support from Comstock Fire, KTFD, and Oshtemo Township Fire Department.
  • 700 block of Norton Drive: A basement fire was reported at 5:27 PM and quickly contained by 5:56 PM. The cause of the fire is believed to be a mechanical issue with the furnace.

KDPS would like to remind residents of the importance of cooking safety, including never leaving food unattended while using the stove and keeping a fire extinguisher in the kitchen to quickly address potential fires. Additionally, routine inspections of heating equipment can help prevent fires caused by mechanical malfunctions.

The department extends its gratitude to Comstock Fire, KTFD, and Oshtemo Fire for their vital assistance in these incidents. KDPS also extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the victim in the S Burdick Street fire.
