Published on December 18, 2025
Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) officers responded to two separate violent incidents Wednesday night, Dec. 17, including a non-fatal shooting and an un-related armed robbery. Investigations into both incidents remain ongoing.
Non-Fatal Shooting
At approximately 8:50 p.m., dispatch received a report of a shooting near the intersection of Portage Street and Bryant Street. Officers arrived and located a 27-year-old male victim suffering from a single gunshot wound.
Officers established a perimeter and conducted a K-9 track; however, the suspect was not located. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment. At this time, the wound does not appear to be life-threatening. The investigation remains active as detectives continue to review evidence and follow up on available leads.
Armed Robbery
At approximately 8:51 p.m., officers were also dispatched to the 500 block of North Edwards Street for a report of an armed robbery at a local drop-in center. A 45-year-old male victim reported being robbed of his backpack by three individuals, who fled southbound on foot.
Due to resources already engaged on the earlier shooting, assistance from a neighboring agency was requested to conduct a K-9 track. The track did not locate the suspects.
Through continued investigative efforts, officers identified multiple individuals believed to be involved. Possible suspects were later located during the investigation. A pneumatic handgun believed to be associated with the incident was recovered during a subsequent consent search for a residence.
An 18-year-old male and 19-year-old male were taken into custody and lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail on charges related to armed robbery. One was additionally lodged on a felony firearm charge involving a pneumatic handgun. They are scheduled to be arraigned on December 18.
“This was a busy and concerning night, but our officers and investigators worked diligently across multiple scenes using evidence and follow-up to move these cases forward,” said Captain Danielle Guilds, head of the Criminal Investigations Division. “We want the community to know these incidents are being thoroughly investigated, and we remain focused on maintaining public safety.”
