At approximately 2:00 a.m. on August 9, Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers were dispatched to the area of Riverview and E Paterson for a traffic crash. Upon arrival, officers located two vehicles with heavy damage. One of the vehicles was located off the roadway with the driver trapped and the second vehicle was found unoccupied near the intersection. Officers found the driver, a 24-year-old male Kalamazoo resident, trapped inside the vehicle with smoke and fire coming from underneath the car. The fire was extinguished, and the driver was extricated, life saving measures were immediately started, however his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced on scene. His name is being withheld until the next of kin can be notified. The driver and the passenger of the second vehicle have not been located at this time. Alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor.
