KALAMAZOO, MI: Detectives with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) are investigating an early morning shooting that left four people with gunshot wounds and another with minor injuries.
At approximately 3:16 a.m., KDPS officers responded to the 2700 block of West Michigan Avenue following reports of shots fired. Upon arrival, officers located a 19-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his leg and a grazing wound. He was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Shortly after, a 23-year-old man arrived at a hospital with a gunshot wound to the stomach. Two additional 23-year-old men also sought treatment for gunshot wounds to their feet. A fifth victim, a 21-year-old man, sustained minor facial injuries from debris but was not struck by gunfire. All injuries are considered to be non-fatal at this time.
Preliminary investigation indicates that the shooting followed a physical altercation. Detectives were also able to identify and arrest one individual on a weapons charge. More information on this subject will be released upon his arraignment.
Detectives believe this was not a random act of violence and can confirm that none of the victims are associated with nearby colleges or universities.
Deputy Chief Matthew Huber addressed the incident, saying,
“This was a reckless act that endangered dozens of people. Incidents like this have no place in our community, and we will use every resource available to identify those responsible and bring them to justice. Our priority is the safety of our residents, and the community can expect to see an increase in police patrols throughout the area of the shooting.”
KDPS is releasing images of two individuals identified as people of interest in this case. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Criminal Investigations Division at 269-337-8139.
