KDPS Conducts Memorial Day Weekend Firearms Enforcement Operation; Six Guns Seized; Multiple Arrests Made
Kalamazoo, MI:
Over the 2025 Memorial Day Holiday Weekend, Kalamazoo Public Safety conducted targeted operations to identify, locate, and arrest those illegally carrying firearms. The enforcement operation included members of the Kalamazoo Valley Enforcement Team (KVET), Crime Reduction Team (CRT), KDPS Operations Division, and Criminal Investigations Division. Multiple contacts were made, which resulted in six illegal firearms being seized throughout the weekend. Here is a breakdown of the cases:
ARMED ROBBERY INVESTIGATION LEADS TO THREE ARRESTS AND FIREARM RECOVERY
On 5/24/2025 at approximately 4:25pm, KDPS Operations Division personnel responded to an armed robbery in the 500 block of N. Rose. The victim reported being jumped by multiple suspects, pistol whipped, and had property stolen from him. The suspects fled the scene and were not immediately located. At approximately 7:00pm, members of the enforcement team located the suspect vehicle in the 600 block of Portage Street and contacted the vehicle’s occupants. One of the vehicle’s occupants attempted to flee on foot but was quickly captured. The one who fled was a 17-year-old Kalamazoo resident and he was concealing a firearm on his person when he was captured. He was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Juvenile home on weapon and drug charges. A 26-year-old Kalamazoo resident was arrested for armed robbery and drug charges, and lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail. A third occupant, 20-year-old Kalamazoo resident, was arrested and lodged for resisting and obstructing police and lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail. Evidence of the armed robbery was located in the vehicle.

FIREARM THROWN FROM VEHICLE DURING A TRAFFIC STOP; ONE ARRESTED
On 5/24/2025 at approximately 5:56pm, a patrol officer stopped a vehicle on Stadium near Howard. One of the vehicle’s occupants threw a firearm out of the window of the vehicle while the officer was approaching the vehicle. The investigation led to the arrest of a 43-year-old male from Kalamazoo. The firearm was previously reported stolen out of Detroit and the Detroit Police Department took the original report. The suspect was not legally allowed to carry a firearm, and he was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail on multiple weapons charges.

KVET TRAFFIC STOP RESULTS IN FIREARM SEIZURE; SUSPECT ARRESTED
On 5/24/2025 at approximately 10:13pm, KVET conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on E. North Street near Harrison. The investigation led to a search of the vehicle, and a firearm was located and seized. The suspect was a 20-year-old male from Kalamazoo, and he was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail for carrying a concealed weapon. The suspect was not legally allowed to carry a firearm.

STOLEN FIREARM RECOVERED DURING KVET TRAFFIC STOP; ONE IN CUSTODY
On 5/24/2025 at approximately 10:47pm, KVET conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on Bridge Street near Gull Road. The investigation led to the vehicle and its occupants being searched. One of the occupants, an 18-year-old Kalamazoo Resident, was concealing a stolen firearm on his person. He was arrested and lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail on multiple weapons violations. He was not legally allowed to carry a firearm.

FIREARM SEIZED DURING KVET STOP ON GULL ROAD; SUSPECT ARRESTED
On 5/25/2025 at approximately 10:57pm, members of KVET conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on Gull Road near Harrison Street. The investigation led to the vehicle being searched and a firearm being seized. The suspect, a 20-year-old Kalamazoo Resident, was arrested on multiple weapons charges and lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail. He was not legally allowed to carry or possess a firearm.

JUVENILE ARRESTED AFTER FIREARM FOUND DURING VEHICLE CONTACT
On 5/26/2025 at approximately 01:07am, patrol officers contacted a vehicle and its occupants in the 3000 block of Michigamme Woods. The investigation led to the vehicle being searched and a firearm was seized from the vehicle. The suspect, a 17-year-old Kalamazoo Resident, was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Juvenile Home on weapons charges.

This operation was conducted due to the recent gun violence that has occurred in our community. In a concerted effort to reduce gun violence, we will continue these enforcement operations throughout the Summer and beyond if necessary.
