KDPS Case Update: Keyshawn Isreal Givhan Sentenced to Life Without Par

Published on January 21, 2025

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety is providing an update regarding the Dec. 30, 2022, homicide of 29-year-old Kalamazoo resident James Douglas White Jr. Earlier this morning, Jan. 21, 2025, Keyshawn Isreal Givhan, 28, of Kalamazoo, was sentenced to mandatory life in prison without the possibility of parole after being convicted of first-degree murder and multiple weapons offenses.

The incident occurred in the 900 block of North Burdick Street, where Mr. White was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite being transported to a local hospital, he succumbed to his injuries. A thorough investigation led to the apprehension of Mr. Givhan, and evidence presented during the trial confirmed his role in Mr. White’s death.

This sentencing follows the earlier conviction of Mr. Givhan’s co-defendant, Jalani Darshawn Nowling, who was sentenced to life in prison without parole in February 2024 after being found guilty of first-degree murder.

KDPS remains committed to securing justice for victims and their families. The department extends its gratitude to the community for their support throughout this investigation and to officers and partner agencies for their tireless efforts in bringing closure to the case.

We urge anyone with information about violent crimes to contact the KDPS Criminal Investigations Division at 269-337-8139 or provide information anonymously through the Kalamazoo Silent Observer tip line at 269-343-2100, the “P3Tips” app, or at www.KalamazooSilentObserver.com.
