KDPS Arrests Domestic Assault Suspect After Hours-Long Standoff
Published on August 31, 2026
Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) officers arrested a 41-year-old man Sunday morning following a felonious domestic assault investigation that led to an hours-long standoff and SWAT response.
At approximately 3:33 a.m. Aug. 30, officers responded to a report of a felonious domestic assault. Investigators learned the suspect allegedly attempted to stab the victim before stealing her vehicle and attempting to strike her with it.
The 35-year-old female victim sustained minor facial scratches and did not require medical treatment.
During the investigation, officers located the stolen vehicle in the 1100 block of Hotop Avenue and obtained consent to search a nearby residence. During the search, officers found a firearm in plain view and observed damage to an attic access panel, indicating the suspect may have been hiding in the attic.
Officers secured the residence and spent several hours making announcements directing the suspect to surrender. The suspect refused to comply.
Due to the violent nature of the original incident, the presence of a firearm and the suspect’s history of violence, the Kalamazoo Metro SWAT Team was activated.
Officers utilized a body-worn-camera attached to a pole to search the attic and identified signs that someone was hiding in the insulation. After additional announcements went unanswered, a KDPS K-9 was deployed and located the suspect.
K-9 Lex apprehended the suspect by the foot, prompting him to comply with officers’ commands. The suspect had no visible injuries but was transported to a local hospital as a precaution. After being medically cleared, he was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail.
