On November 5, 2025, at 2:12 p.m., Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) officers responded to a report of a baby not breathing in the 3000 block of Heatherdowns Lane. Officers arrived quickly and began life-saving measures on 3-month-old Brooklyn Ja’veil Jackson, who was found unresponsive. Despite emergency medical care, Brooklyn did not survive. The Criminal Investigations Division, along with the Kalamazoo Forensic Crime Lab, conducted an extensive investigation. On March 24, 2026, the Kalamazoo County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the death a homicide. On June 18, 2026, the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor’s Office authorized a two-count felony warrant against Tonette Daytonya Sigsbee, 33, for involuntary manslaughter and tampering with evidence; she was arrested the same day. Sigsbee was the child’s caretaker at the time of the incident. Sigsbee was arraigned before Judge Becket J. Jones on June 22 where she was given a $100,000 personal recognizance bond. “We are deeply grateful for the diligence and unwavering commitment of our investigators, who worked tirelessly to uncover the truth in this heartbreaking case,” said Captain Danielle Guilds of the Criminal Investigations Division. “We also want to acknowledge the patience and strength shown by the family during such an incredibly difficult time.
