Kalamazoo, MI: On Monday, July 30th, 2012, at 11:06 p.m., Kalamazoo Public Safety officers responded to a report of a vehicle that had crashed into a tree at the intersection of S. Burdick and Kilgore Rd. Upon arrival, Public Safety officers found that all four occupants of the crashed vehicle had fled the scene on foot. Officers began searching the area locating all the occupants a short distance away. Two passengers sustained injures from the crash, with one of the injuries being severe. Both passengers were transported to Bronson hospital and are listed in stable condition.

Through the course of the investigation, it was determined that the occupants had just left the Meijer on S. Westnedge after steeling three half gallon bottles of gin when the crash occurred. Alcohol and speed appear to be a factor in the crash. The driver, a 37 year-old Kalamazoo resident, was arrested and lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail for operating while intoxicated causing serious injury, leaving the scene of an injury accident and driving on a suspended license pending review of the investigation by the prosecutor’s office. The Portage Police Department is currently investigating the theft of the liquor from Meijer.

Robbery Leads to Large Drug Seizure

Kalamazoo, MI:  On July 11, 2012, at 9:15 p.m. officers from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to a residence in the 700 block of Village St on a report of a robbery.  The initial report was that 2 armed suspects entered the victim’s  home, committed the robbery, and then fled in a vehicle.  The vehicle was described as a gray 4 dr Buick.

While several officers checked the area for the suspect vehicle other officers made contact with the victim.  The victim reported that nothing was taken during the robbery. When the officers went into the victim’s home to check for possible evidence they immediately detected the odor of marijuana and also noticed loose marijuana in plain sight on the floor.  The residents denied there were illegal drugs in the home and also denied consent to search the home.  The residence was secured and during a protective search, to assure there were no other subjects in the home, a marijuana grow operation was located in an upstairs bedroom.

A search warrant was obtained for the residence and during the search officers located a large amount of processed marijuana as well as marijuana plants, acid, suspected bath salts, and over $1800.  Also during the search a large Psilocybin mushrooms grow operation was discovered.

A case against the resident, a 21 year old, is being submitted to the Kalamazoo County Prosecutors Officer.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Kalamazoo Public Safety at 337-8994 or Silent Observer at 343-2100 or www.kalamazoosilentobserver.com.

SUSPECTED METH LAB EXPLOSION AND FIRE INJURES TWO

Kalamazoo, MI:  On July 7, 2012 at approximately 2206 hours, Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to a report of a structure fire in the 1700 block of Bloomfield located on the City’s southeast side.  Additional calls to KDPS 911 Dispatch indicated that the fire was a result of an explosion and that the explosion was the result of meth being cooked at the residence.

Once on scene, firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, during which time they located evidence of a possible meth lab that had been operating inside the residence.  None of the occupants of the residence were present when Public Safety Officers arrived on scene and witnesses reported seeing several subjects flee the apartment shortly after the explosion.

A 31-year-old Kalamazoo resident suffered some minor lacerations when he attempted to put out the fire.  He is not believed to be associated with the meth lab explosion.  He was treated by LIFE personnel on scene and refused transport to a local hospital.  A second subject, a 34-year-old Kalamazoo resident showed up at Borgess Hospital, approximately 45 minutes after the fire with significant burns to his body.  His injuries are considered serious but non-life threatening.  The investigation is continuing and it is unknown at this time to what extent this individual played in the explosion and subsequent fire.

  • Fireworks Safety

Kalamazoo, MI:  Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers would like to remind everyone how fast fires can develop as dry conditions persist. As consumer fireworks have become legal in Michigan it is likely that their increased use will result in an increase in fires and injuries. To prevent injuries and fires the following safety tips are recommended:

    • Parents and caretakers should always closely supervise teens if they are using fireworks.

    • Parents should not allow young children to handle or use fireworks.

    • Fireworks should only be used outdoors.

    • Always have water ready if you are shooting fireworks.

    • Know your fireworks. Read the caution label before igniting. Do not light fireworks near flammable liquids, buildings and vehicles..

    • Alcohol and fireworks do not mix.

    • Wear safety glasses whenever using fireworks.

    • Never relight a “dud” firework. Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water.

    • Soak spent fireworks with water before placing them in an outdoor garbage can.

    • Avoid using homemade fireworks or illegal explosives: They can kill you!

    • Report illegal explosives, like M-80s and quarter sticks, to the fire or police department

The use of sparklers is common with children of all ages; however, they burn at over 1200 degrees. Parents are encouraged to follow following sparkler safety tips:

    • Always remain standing while using sparklers.

    • Never hold a child in your arms while using sparklers.

    • Never hold, or light, more than one sparkler at a time.

    • Never throw sparklers.

    • Sparkler wire and stick remain hot long after the flame has gone out. Be sure to drop spent sparklers in a bucket of water.

    • Teach children not to wave sparklers, or run, while holding sparklers.

A few steps of prevention can eliminate a disastrous injury or fire. Further information can be obtained at www.fireworksafety.com  and www.NFPA.org.
