Home Owner Shot During Robbery
Kalamazoo, MI: On January 18, 2013, at 11:28 p.m., Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officers we called to the 4300 block of Chelten Ave reference to a report of shots fired in a house. As officers arrived on Chelten Ave they noticed a vehicle leaving at a high rate of speed. The vehicle was stopped and officers found a 25 year old Kalamazoo resident with a gun shot wound. Also in the vehicle were the victim’s 24 year old girlfriend, 4 year old son, and 18 year old nephew.
The victim advised officers that he was leaving his home when he was confronted by a suspect armed with a handgun. The victim reached for the suspect’s weapon and the 2 began struggling. During the struggle the suspect fired 2 shots, one struck a wall and the other struck the victim. Even though he had just been shot the victim was able to overpower the suspect and disarm him. As he was attempting to exit his house he was confronted by a second armed suspect. This suspect ordered the victim to the ground where he then physically assaulted him and retrieved his partner’s weapon. Both suspects then fled the scene on foot.
Officers also spoke with the victim’s girlfriend and nephew who advised they were in a vehicle in the driveway during the robbery. While the initial victim was in the house the second suspect approached their vehicle and demanded their money. This suspect was also armed with a handgun. As they were turning over their property the suspect was distracted, possibly by the sound of the gunshots, and the nephew was able to flee from the vehicle. He was briefly chased by the second suspect and ended up at a local business where he was able to call 911. The girlfriend and her child were able to run to a neighbor’s house where she too called 911.
The victim and his family members were on their way to the hospital when they were stopped by KDPS officers. The victim was transported to Bronson Hospital where he was treated for a single gun shot wound to the abdomen and then later released.
The suspects were described as 2 B/M’s, one approximately 6’5 240 lbs and the other 5’7. Both were wearing all dark clothing including masks. The shorter suspect is also believed to have dread locks. They are considered armed and dangerous. Stolen during the robbery were 2 cell phones.

Kalamazoo, MI: On July 11, 2012, at 9:15 p.m. officers from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to a residence in the 700 block of Village St on a report of a robbery. The initial report was that 2 armed suspects entered the victim’s home, committed the robbery, and then fled in a vehicle. The vehicle was described as a gray 4 dr Buick.
While several officers checked the area for the suspect vehicle other officers made contact with the victim. The victim reported that nothing was taken during the robbery. The residents denied there were illegal drugs in the home and also denied consent to search the home. The residence was secured and during a protective search, to assure there were no other subjects in the home, a marijuana grow operation was located in an upstairs bedroom.
A search warrant was obtained for the residence and during the search officers located a large amount of processed marijuana as well as marijuana plants, acid, suspected bath salts, and over $1800. Also during the search a large Psilocybin mushrooms grow operation was discovered.
A case against the resident, a 21 year old, is being submitted to the Kalamazoo County Prosecutors Officer.
