KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - 125 inner-city Kalamazoo youth were surprised with free bikes Wednesday.
They were dropped off at their homes by Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers.
The bike giveaway was organized by Kalamazoo Public Safety's COPS Division.
The goal is to build bridges between police and city kids, so that down the road they will take ownership of their community and become leaders.
The 125 mountain bikes were all strapped to the back of KDPS cruisers ready to go.
They were donated by the Wright for Kids Foundation as a way to strengthen the bond between inner city youth and Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers.
"We got to get a hold of our community, because if we don't protect our community, it's not going to be our community. I just think helping youth is the beginning," said Bill Wright the founder of Wright for Kids Foundation.
The first stop was 10-year-old Keshawn Jackson's house.
Jackson was chosen by KDPS for volunteering to help police test fire hose.
He could barely contain himself as his shiny helmet was strapped on.
Within minutes he was on his new ride with a new outlook on law enforcement.
"Police officers help a lot and they help the community to be safe," said Keshawn Jackson.
Jackson's mother, Tamara Davis had her hopes renewed too and even shed a few tears.
"Being a single mom and on disability it's hard to be able to afford a new bike every year, so it's a blessing," said Davis.
The next stop was 9-year-old Trayden Ampey's place.

His father walked him out to see his new bike. It was a big surprise after his old bike was stolen a few months ago.
"It means he has some faith in the community and the police officers. It shows they care and are considerate," said Ray Ampey.
The last stop was Nicole Anderson's apartment where she lives with her four sons. The night went too fast for KDPS officers.
"Its like Christmas you know. It's satisfaction for me to see any child smile," said Sgt. Tim Randall with Kalamazoo Public Safety.
Police officers picked the Anderson boys for their good behavior, and mom was a little overwhelmed.
"It's exciting, and it's a breath of fresh air that the community is giving back to us," said Nicole Anderson as one of her son's tested out his new bike.
"Thank you for this bike!" said Emmanuel Anderson
The bike helmets were donated by Safe Kids.

KDPS hopes to make this an annual event.
