Suspect in Shooting Arrested
Kalamazoo, MI: On October 29, 2012, at about 8:38 pm, a Kalamazoo Public Safety Officer was flagged down in the 500 block of Mabel Street by friends of a shooting victim. The victim, a 17 year old Kalamazoo resident, was suffering from two non-life threatening gunshot wounds. The victim reported that the incident had occurred about half an hour earlier in the 1200 block of N. Church Street. The victim was transported to Bronson Hospital by Life Ambulance for medical treatment.
During the investigation, an 18 year old Kalamazoo resident was identified as the suspect. Less than two hours later, Public Safety Officers arrested the suspect without incident and lodged him at the Kalamazoo County Jail. The weapon was not recovered.

KALAMAZOO, MI: KDPS is investigating two armed robberies that occurred within 22 minutes of each other early Saturday morning, October 27th, 2012.
The first robbery occurred at 3:14 a.m. in the 800 block of W. Walnut. The victims, ages 22 and 20, were approached by two suspects. One of the suspects was in possession of a shotgun and the other suspect had a handgun. After taking the victims money and cell phone the suspects fled west towards Davis Street. Suspect # 1 is described as being a black male in his late teens to early twenties. He is approximately 6’, thin build, and was wearing a dark colored jacket with a fur lined hood. On the back of the jacket was a Detroit Tigers “D’. Suspect # 2 is described as a black male, same age, approximately 5’6” tall, wearing a dark colored jacket and blue jeans.
The second robbery occurred in the 1000 block of Interfaith Boulevard at 3:36 a.m.. The two victims ages 31 and 21 were approached by five black males. The suspects pistol-whipped the 21 year old female and stole the victims’ cell phone and money. The suspects are described as all black males wearing a zip-up style jacket or hoodie that were dark colored. Two of the suspects were described as being between 6’ and 6’2” tall while the other three suspects were described as being shorter. All were in their late teens and appeared young to the victims. One suspect was in possession of a long gun while the remaining four suspects were said to all have handguns.
In both cases, a K-9 unit attempted a track of the suspects but it is believed that the suspects got into an unknown style car parked a short distance away from the scene.

KALAMAZOO, MI: On Friday, October 26, 2012 at 9:31 p.m., Kalamazoo Public Safety personnel responded to a report of a smoke filling the Wendy’s restaurant located at 2730 W. Michigan Avenue. Kalamazoo Public Safety officers arrived and found smoke inside the restaurant however no signs of fire. It was later determined that the smoke was caused by an overheated motor in the HVAC system.
While public safety officers were investigating the fire, a KDPS Fire Engine was struck from behind by a vehicle driven by a 28 year old Oshtemo resident. The fire engine was not occupied at the time of the incident and no public safety officers were injured as a result of the crash. The driver of the vehicle was treated on scene by LIFE ambulance for minor cuts to his hand.
The investigation determined that the driver of the vehicle was distracted watching other fire apparatus operating in the parking lot of the Wendy’s Restaurant and failed to see the apparatus parked in the curb lane of West Michigan Avenue directly in front of Wendy’s. The driver was cited for: Failing to stop in an Assured Clear Distance as well as expired plates and no proof of insurance. Alcohol was not a factor in this accident.
Kalamazoo Public Safety would like to remind everyone to ensure that they use caution when operating a motor vehicle around the scene of a police or fire emergency.

Kalamazoo, MI: On Tuesday, October 23rd, 2012 at 9:11 p.m., A Kalamazoo Public Safety officer conducted a traffic stop on a 2012 Silver Chrysler Minivan for a traffic violation on Portage Rd near E. Crosstown Pkwy. As the officer approached the vehicle and made contact with the male driver, he pretended to look for his driver’s license and abruptly sped away at a high rate of speed southbound on Portage Rd. The driver lost control of his vehicle while attempting to make a left turn onto Washington St. crashing into the front of a business. Moments after the crash, Public Safety officers arrived on scene to see the driver exit the vehicle and flee on foot. Public Safety officers gave chase and were able to apprehend him after a brief foot pursuit.
The vehicle and building involved in the crash received extensive damage. The driver of the vehicle reported minor injures from the crash and was transported to Bronson Hospital for treatment.
The thirty-year-old driver is currently lodged at the Kalamazoo County jail on the charges fleeing and eluding, resisting and obstructing arrest, driving on a suspended license and two outstanding misdemeanor warrants pending review of this investigation by the prosecutor’s office.

Kalamazoo, MI: On Monday, October 22nd 2012, at approximately 11:31p.m., Kalamazoo Public Safety officers responded to a report of a house fire 1100 block of Maywood Ave. Upon arrival, Public Safety officers encountered a fire on the front porch of the home. Officers quickly extinguished the fire which caused damage to the porch and living room wall. There were no injuries as a result of the fire. The incident is currently under investigation by the Kalamazoo Fire Marshal.

Kalamazoo Man Dies After Being Assaulted
Kalamazoo, MI: On 10-21-12 at 3:23AM, Public Safety Officers were sent to the 700 block of W. Cedar St. on a report of an assault in progress. Officers arrived and found a 24 year old Kalamazoo man with extensive head trauma. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
A suspect was identified by officers, he was found to be a 34 year old Kalamazoo resident. This suspect was arrested and is currently being held in the Kalamazoo County Jail on an Open Murder charge. He is expected to be arraigned on Tuesday, October 23rd. 2012.

Kalamazoo Man Murdered, Suspect Arrested
Kalamazoo, MI: On 10-21-12 at 1:11AM, Public Safety Officers were sent to the 4200 block of Lakesedge Dr. on a report of shots fired. Officers arrived and found a 23 year old Kalamazoo man suffering from a life threatening gunshot wound. The victim was transported to Bronson Hospital by an unknown party, where he later died from his injuries. A second victim was also located at the scene, he is an 18year old Kalamazoo resident. His injury is not life threatening and he is presently being treated at Bronson Hospital.
Through the course of the investigation, a 19 year old Kalamazoo resident was identified as the shooter. This suspect was arrested and is currently being held in the Kalamazoo County Jail on an Open Murder charge and Assault to Commit Murder. He is expected to be arraigned on Tuesday, October 23rd. 2012.

Kalamazoo, MI: On Saturday, October 13th 2012, at approximately 11:04 p.m., Kalamazoo Public Safety officers responded to a reported Home Invasion in the 1100 block of Berkshire Dr. As the resident arrived home, he was approached by an agitated twenty-one year old male subject who began chasing him in an aggressive manner. Fearing that an assault was imminent, the resident retreated into his home and locked the door. The male suspect then broke the glass to the storm door and made an unsuccessful attempt to break down the exterior door. The suspect proceeded to the rear of the residence, broke out a kitchen window and crawled inside the home. With the suspect in chase, the resident gathered his family members and took shelter in an upstairs bedroom. The suspect followed the residents upstairs and made several unsuccessful attempts to force open the bedroom door. After failing to break open the door, the suspect fled the scene on foot.
Kalamazoo Public Safety officers arrived on scene and began searching for the suspect. A neighbor in the 900 block Ellendale St. spotted the suspect and called 911. PSO Marc Rifenberg and his K9 Titan began tracking the suspect through a wooded area west of Ellendale St. After about a ten minute track, the suspect was located hiding in the woods and taken into custody without incident.
The residents were not injured during the home invasion. The suspect sustained several small lacerations from the broken glass and was transported to Bronson Hospital for treatment. After receiving treatment, the suspect was lodged Kalamazoo County jail on the charge of home invasion pending review of this case by the prosecutor’s office.

Kalamazoo, MI: On October 10th 2012, officers from the Community Outreach Problem Solving Division, (C.O.P.S.) received information that the sale and production of methamphetamine was taking place in the 2400 block of Roosevelt Street, in Cooper Township. The Kalamazoo Valley Enforcement Team (KVET) investigated the tip and as a result of the information obtained, KVET officers executed a search warrant at the suspect’s home.
During the execution of the search warrant, the suspect was located inside the residence along with another subject. KVET officers searched the resident and located a variety of items used to package drugs, an ounce of marijuana and a can that revealed a secret compartment. Located inside the can’s secret compartment were several grams of suspected methamphetamine and 2 types of prescription pills. This investigation indicates that all of the recovered items were in the suspect’s possession with the intent to distribute. The 31 year old Kalamazoo man was arrested on scene and is currently being held at the county jail where he is facing a variety of drug related charges.

Kalamazoo, MI: On Friday, October 12th, 2012, at approximately 7:32p.m., Kalamazoo Public Safety officers responded to a residential structure fire in the 2600 block of Edgewood Dr. The residents were home at the time and were alerted to the fire by the presence of smoke. The two residents the exited structure unharmed and called 911. Public Safety officers arrived and encountered fire and heavy smoke conditions in the attic of the home. Officers were on scene for approximately one hour conducting fire suppression operations. There were no injuries as a result of the fire. The incident is currently under investigation by the Kalamazoo Fire Marshal.
