Kalamazoo, MI: On March 6th, 2013 KVET officers from the Community Outreach Problem Solving Division, attempted to conduct a traffic stop in the 3000 block of S Westnedge on a wanted subject.  While attempting to stop the vehicle, the driver fled from officers by driving in reverse through a parking lot at a high rate of speed.  While doing so, the driver collided with another unmarked police vehicle that was pulling into the same parking lot.  The fleeing suspect then also rammed the cruiser that originally initiated the traffic stop before the driver gave up and was placed under arrest.

While being placed under arrest, a large quantity of powder cocaine and crack cocaine was located on his person as well as a large sum of U.S. currency in his vehicle.  The recovered drugs have a street value of well over $6000.00.  As a result of this investigation a 33yr old Kalamazoo resident was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail on charges of fleeing and eluding, possession with intent to deliver crack and powder cocaine and malicious destruction of police property.

    Kalamazoo, MI:

On February 23, 2013 at approximately 0749 hrs, Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers responded to a 911 call from an employee of Norfolk Railroad who stated that someone had just stolen his vehicle.  The owner parked his vehicle, a 2002 Chevy Tahoe, on the corner of Porter and Willard Street and ran into the railroad tower to sign out from work.  The vehicle had been left unlocked and was running for only a short amount of time when he noticed an unknown male subject sitting in the driver’s seat of his vehicle.

The owner ran up to the driver’s side of the door to confront the suspect.  The suspect put the vehicle in reverse, and backed into a railroad sign.  The owner then ran up to the vehicle and grabbed the luggage rack.  As he held on, the suspect fled at a high rate of speed through the parking lot toward a parked vehicle.  The owner let go of the vehicle moments before it sideswiped a parked vehicle.  The owner of the vehicle was not injured.

The suspect vehicle was last seen heading northbound on Porter Street at a high rate of speed.  While traveling down Porter Street, the suspect momentarily lost control of the vehicle and hit a utility pole head-on causing both airbags to deploy. After the crash, suspect was able to continue driving northbound on Porter.

Public Safety Officers quickly responded to the area and, with the help of several concerned citizens, located the stolen vehicle abandoned in the 2700 block of Slater Rd.  Officers canvassed the area and a K-9 track was initiated.  A person matching the description was spotted by PSO Merren in the New Horizon Apartment Complex on Inverness Dr.  When officers attempted to make contact with the suspect, he ran southbound across Gull Road.  After a short foot pursuit, he was apprehended by Sgt. Kelley.

The suspect, a 19-year-old Kalamazoo resident, had recently been released from prison and was on parole for Home Invasion.  He was arrested on several charges to include; Carjacking, Reckless Driving, No License, and Resisting and Obstructing Officers.  He was also arrested for Possession with Intent to Deliver Imitation Cocaine.  He was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail pending arraignment.

Public Safety would like to remind citizens to keep their vehicles locked when unoccupied. Public Safety is also requesting anyone with information about this crime to contact the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety at 337-8994, the Criminal Investigation Division at 337-8139, or Silent Observer at 343-2100.
