  • Jury Convicts Clarence Ross of Homicide

    Kalamazoo, MI:  Public Safety Officers had been sent to the Quick Stop convenience store at 1405 Portage Rd. on Sept. 30th 2012 on a report of a man down.  Officers discovered 24 year old Jheryl Cecil Wright dead in the store from several gunshot wounds.

     

    On Friday evening, 12-20-13, a jury convicted Clarence Edward Ross, age 32 in 9th Circuit Court for the murder of Jheryl Wright.  Mr. Ross was convicted of 1st Degree Murder, Felony Firearm and Solicitation to Commit Murder.  Clarence Ross will be sentenced on January 13th 2014.

  • Suspect Arrested in Portage Rd. Homicide

    Kalamazoo, MI:  Public Safety detectives arrested Deondra Lamount Liggion, age 35 of Kalamazoo yesterday for the murder of Jeffery Orlando Pratt.  Mr. Pratt was shot and killed at a party in the 1200 block of Portage Rd. on November, 30th.

     

    Deondra Liggion was arraigned this afternoon by Judge Santoni in 8th District Court.  Mr. Liggion was arraigned on Open Murder, Assault with Intent to Murder, Felon in Possession of a Firearm and 3 counts of Felony Firearm.  Mr. Liggion is currently lodged in the Kalamazoo County Jail, he was denied bond.

  • Update to Injury Accident from Sept. 1st, 2013

    Kalamazoo:  On Sept. 1st 2013 at 12:37am Public Safety Officers were sent to the 600 block of S. Westnedge on a personal injury accident.  Officers located a female pedestrian in the roadway that had been struck by a vehicle, the vehicle then fled the scene.  The victim of this accident had been hospitalized but has since been released from Bronson Hospital

     

    On 10-18-13, the suspect driver of the hit and run vehicle was arraigned in 8th District Court.  Wassim H. Hassoun, age 24 of Kalamazoo was charged with a 4 year felony for Leaving the Scene of an Accident Causing Serious Injury.  He was given a $5,000 PR bond and has since bonded out of the Kalamazoo County Jail.

  • Detectives Continue to Investigate the Murder of Alfred Minka

    Kalamazoo:  On August 23rd at 10:27pm, Public Safety Officers were sent to the 3100 block of Brookmont St. on a report of a man down inside his home.  Officers arrived and found Alfred Minka, an 87 year old Kalamazoo man dead on the floor of his home.

     

    Public Safety Detectives continue to investigate this incident and are asking the public for assistance in gaining further information about this homicide.

  • Armed Robbery Suspect Sought by Police

    Kalamazoo:   On 10-05-2013 at approximately 7 p.m., officers from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to the Family Dollar store located at 1261 Portage Rd., in the City of Kalamazoo, in reference to an armed robbery.  An unknown subject entered the store, brandished an object under his shirt and robbed the store of an undetermined amount of cash.  The subject fled the store on foot.

     

    On 10-08-2013 at approximately 10 a.m., officers from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to the Sunny Mart at 2020 E. Cork St., in the City of Kalamazoo, in reference to an armed robbery.  A subject entered the store, indicated he had a weapon and robbed the clerk of an undetermined amount of cash.  The subject fled the store on foot to a waiting vehicle.

     

    On 10-08-2013 at approximately 1:30 p.m., officers from the Kalamazoo Township Police Department responded to 812 Shoppers Lane in the City of Parchment in reference to another armed robbery.  The subject entered the store, brandished a knife and stole an undetermined amount of cash.  The suspect fled on foot to a waiting vehicle driven by another subject. 

     

    The subjects fled in a vehicle that was located by Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety K-9 officer Jeff Deblecourt, driving on Paterson St. near Riverview St.  An attempt was made to stop the vehicle; the driver, Aquarius Walker, a 42 years old Kalamazoo resident, failed to stop.  A short pursuit ensued and eventually the driver, Mr. Walker, and the passenger, later identified as Stanley Rice, a 39 year old Kalamazoo resident, both fled on foot.  Mr. Walker was arrested after falling into the Kalamazoo River while Mr. Rice eluded police capture.

     

    It was determined through a joint investigation by the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety and Kalamazoo Township Police Detectives that Mr. Rice and Mr. Walker had been involved in several serious crimes, included armed robbery, breaking and entering, larceny, resisting and obstructing police and fleeing and eluding.

     

    On 10-09-2013 charges were authorized against Aquarius Walker by the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor’s Office for 2 counts of armed robbery, breaking and entering a building, accessory after the fact, fleeing and eluding and resisting and obstructing police.  Mr. Walker was arraigned on 10-09-2013 in 8th District Court.

     

    Also on 10-09-2013, charges were authorized against Stanley Allen Rice, age 39 by the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor’s Office for 3 counts of armed robbery and 1 count of resisting and obstructing police.  This 4 count arrest warrant was signed by detectives on 10-10-2013, officers are currently attempting to locate Mr. Rice.  Detectives are asking the public for assistance on locating Stanley Allen Rice.  Please contact the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety or the Kalamazoo Township Police Department with any information on Mr. Rice.

  • Tyrien Sheppard Accepts Plea Agreement in Murder of Jante Mackerel

    Kalamazoo, MI:  On 10-21-12 at 1:11AM, Public Safety Officers were sent to the 4200 block of Lakesedge Dr. on a report of shots fired.  Officers arrived and found a 23 year old Kalamazoo man suffering from a life threatening gunshot wound.  The victim was transported to Bronson Hospital by an unknown party, where he later died from his injuries.  The victim was identified as Jante Camreen Mackerel, age 23.

     

    Tyrein Deanthony Sheppard, age 20 of Kalamazoo has accepted a plea agreement in the murder of Mr. Mackerel.  Tyrein Sheppard pled guilty on Tuesday to 2nd Degree Murder and Felony Firearm.  He will be sentenced on September 30th at 9am.

  • Samuel Steel Convicted in the Murder of Milo Conklin

    Kalamazoo, MI:  On Sunday, April 24, 2011, at approximately 9:10pm., Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 600 block of Mabel St.  Responding officers discovered Milo Conklin, a 35-year old Kalamazoo resident, had been shot.  Mr. Conklin died as a result of the injuries.  A second victim, a 51 year old Kalamazoo man, was also discovered at the scene to have minor injuries from a gun shot wound. 

     

    Samuel Steel, age 44 was convicted today in 8th District Court of 1st Degree Felony Murder, 2 counts of Felony Firearms and Felon in Possession of a Firearm in the murder of Milo Conklin.  The case was tried by Assistant Attorney General Paul Cusick.

     

    “Violent murderers like Samuel Steel III belong behind bars, where they will no longer be a threat to society,” said Attorney General Bill Schuette.  “I’d like to thank Chief Hadley and all those in the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety who helped bring Steel to justice.  The streets of Kalamazoo are safer for their efforts.”

  • Update to 1400 block of Race St. Homicide

    Kalamazoo:  The victim of the homicide this past Friday evening in the 1400 block of Race St. has been identified as Lionel Lopez Jr. age 43. 

     

    The suspect arrested in connection to the murder of Lionel Lopez has been identified as Demarcus Cornellious Finley, age 20.  He was arraigned on 08-25-13 in 8th District Court.  The charges of Open Murder, 2 counts of Felony Firearms, Felon in Possession of a Firearm and Possession with Intent to Deliver Marijuana were all authorized.  Mr. Finley is being held in the Kalamazoo County Jail with No Bond.
