  • Arrest Made in 2014 N. Church St. Homicide Case

    Kalamazoo, MI: On Sunday, July 6th 2014 at 8:00pm officers responded to the 1000 block of N. Church St. on a report of a shooting.  Officers discovered that Orlando David Walker, age 30 had been shot in the chest and died as a result of his injury.

     

    Over the course of the past year, the Criminal Investigations Division has been investigating this case. Yesterday, detectives secured an arrest warrant from the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor’s Office for Dante Lemont Johnson, age 29 of Kalamazoo.  Mr. Johnson has been charged for the murder of Orlando David Walker.  Dante Johnson was arraigned on charges of Open Murder, Felony Firearms and Felon in Possession of a Firearm in 8th District Court this afternoon.  Mr. Johnson was denied bond.

  • Suspect Arraigned in Edgemoor Ave. Homicide

    Kalamazoo, MI: 

    The suspect arrested in the murder of Debra Susan Jean on Sunday has been arraigned in 8th District Court this afternoon.  Joseph Christopher Janssen, age 25 of Kalamazoo was formally charged with Open Murder by the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor’s Office.  He was arraigned on Open Murder and bond was denied.

  • Suspicious Death Ruled a Homicide

    Kalamazoo, MI:  The female discovered dead inside her home in the 200 block of Edgemoor Ave. on Sunday has been positively identified as Debra Susan Jean, age 62 of Kalamazoo.  The investigation and autopsy revealed that she had been murdered inside her home.

     

    Public Safety detectives have a 25 year old Kalamazoo man in custody for the murder of Ms. Jean.  Detectives anticipate presenting the homicide case to the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor’s Office later this afternoon.  The suspect will not be identified until after arraignment.

     

    No further information as to the cause of death will be released at this time.  Kalamazoo Public Safety extends our condolences to the family and friends of Debra Susan Jean.

  • Fatal Traffic Crash

    Kalamazoo, MI: On 06-07-15 at 4:20am, a Public Safety Officer noticed a vehicle driving the wrong way on N. Westnedge Ave. near Frank St.  The car then turned east onto Drexel St. and the officer drove after the car to conduct a traffic stop.  When the officer caught up with the vehicle at Hopkins and N. Westnedge Ave., he activated his lights and siren to pull the car over.  The vehicle accelerated at a high rate of speed, fleeing from the officer.  The officer did not pursue the vehicle and turned his lights and siren off.

     

    The vehicle traveled several blocks and crashed into a tree at N. Westnedge near Willard St.  When officers arrived on scene, they found the driver to be the lone occupant of the car.  He was unresponsive and medical treatment was started immediately.  He was transported to Bronson Hospital where he later died as a result of his injuries from the crash.

     

    The driver was identified as Donwaun Casanova McFerrin, age 27 of Kalamazoo.  Kalamazoo Public Safety extends our condolences to the family and friends of Mr. McFerrin.

  • Suspicious Death

    Kalamazoo, MI: On Sunday, June 7th, 2015, at approximately 11:24am, Kalamazoo Public Safety officers responded to the 200 block of Edgemoor Ave. in reference to a welfare check. Officers discovered a female inside the home who appears to have died several days ago.

     

    The death of the woman is considered suspicious at this time, detectives are awaiting results from the autopsy to determine the cause of death, which will be completed on Monday afternoon.  The victim will not be identified until family notifications are completed.

  • Missing Person

    KALAMAZOO, MI:  Public Safety Detectives are seeking assistance from the community in locating John May Jr.  Mr. May is 71 years old.  He is African American, approximately 5’10” tall and weighs 280lbs.  He was last seen with a scruffy beard.

     

    Mr. May has not been seen since January, it is unknown where he could be at this time.  Mr. May resides in the Vine St. and S. Rose St. area of Kalamazoo.  John May has a medical disorder which causes him to walk noticeably unsteady and his speech is mostly mumbled.

  • Man Critically Injured in Car vs. Pedestrian Accident

    KALAMAZOO, MI:  Public Safety Officers were sent to a car vs. pedestrian accident last night at 7:19pm on W. Crosstown Pkwy. west of Portage St.  Officers discovered a 56 year old Kalamazoo man had been struck by a westbound vehicle.

     

    The driver of the vehicle is a 56 year old female from Kalamazoo.  Speed and alcohol are not believed to be factors of the driver of the vehicle.  The investigation into the cause of the accident is still under investigation.

     

    The victim suffered multiple fractures from the accident, he is currently listed in critical condition at Bronson Hospital.

  • Public Safety Officers Investigate Home Invasion and Sexual Assault

    KALAMAZOO, MI.  Public Safety Officers were sent to the 1600 block of Reed St. on February 25th at 3:03am on a report of a home invasion and gunshots being fired.  During the initial investigation, officers determined that an unknown suspect had gained entry into the home and displayed a handgun to the resident. 

     

    The resident, a 14 year old female, reported that the suspect entered the home and gathered property to be taken.  The suspect sexually assaulted the juvenile and fled after another resident arrived at the home.  The suspect confronted this second resident and robbed him at gunpoint as well.  The suspect left walking westbound on Reed St. at which point the suspect fired two gunshots at the ground while walking down the street.

     

    There were no visible injuries to either victim.  The juvenile was taken to the YWCA for an examination.  The suspect is described as a black male in his 20’s, 5’8” to 6’0” tall, 200-230 lbs. He has corn rolls or braids in his hair and has 2 or 3 tear drop tattoos near his left eye.  He was wearing a black baseball cap, blue hoodie under a black coat and blue jeans.

  • Deceased Woman Identified from Southside Apartment

  • Woman Found Dead in Southside Apartment

    KALAMAZOO, MI:  Public Safety Officers were sent to the 1300 block of Mills St. on January 22nd at 9:21pm on a report of woman dead on a couch in the living room.  Officers discovered the unidentified female had died well before their arrival.

     

    Detectives are currently working to positively identify the deceased woman and make family notifications.  The cause of death is currently under investigation, foul play is not suspected at this time.
