  • Man Shot During Early Morning Break In

    Kalamazoo, MI:  Public Safety Officers responded to a report of a man shot in the 1800 block of Fulford St. at 5:42 this morning.  Officers discovered that the victim, a 25 year old Kalamazoo man was shot in the leg after an intruder broke into a home he was visiting. 

     

    The intruder forced entry into the home and was confronted by the victim.  The suspect fired multiple gunshots at the victim, striking him once in the leg.  The suspect then fled the area but was known by the resident of the home and the suspect’s name was given to police.

     

    Detectives found a possible location for the suspect in the 900 block of Stockbridge St.,  he was ultimately arrested attempting to leave the home at approximately 11:20 am.  A handgun was recovered from the suspect at the time of arrest.

     

    The suspect, a 28 year old Kalamazoo man was arrested for Assault with Intent to Murder, Home Invasion, Felony Firearm, Felon in Possession of a Firearm and Carrying a Concealed Weapon.  He is currently lodged in the Kalamazoo County Jail.

  • Two Separate Shootings over the Weekend on Washington St.

    Kalamazoo, MI:  Two separate shootings over the weekend injured two individuals and officers are asking the public for assistance in identifying the suspects.

     

    On 09-28-14 at approximately 1:25am, Public Safety Officers were notified of an individual arriving at Bronson Hospital for treatment to a gunshot wound to the face.  The victim, a 21 year old Kalamazoo man, was the passenger in a car driving in the area of Washington and March St. when he was hit by gunfire from an unknown source.  The victim was shot in the face, his injuries are considered non-life threatening.  There is no suspect information at this time.

     

    The second shooting occurred on 09-28-14 at approximately 10:10pm, Public Safety Officers were sent to the 1300 block of Washington St. for shots fired.  They located a 44yr. old Kalamazoo resident with a gunshot wound to his right arm.  The victim reported standing outside when he suddenly heard gunshots and was struck by a bullet. 

     

    The suspects drove by in a green or grey colored sedan and fired shots from the vehicle as it drove past.  The suspects are unknown at this time.

    Kalamazoo, MI:  Public Safety Detectives are looking for the suspect in this felonious assault investigation, we are asking the public for assistance in locating him.  Officers have probable cause to arrest Adam David Shigwadja, age 18.  He is a white male, 5’ 7” tall and approximately 130lbs.  He is known to frequent the Kalamazoo south and east side as well as Paw Paw, MI.   If Mr. Shigwadja is located, please contact Kalamazoo Public Safety at 337-8994.

  • Shooting on Mt. Olivet St. Leaves One Man Dead

    Kalamazoo:  Public Safety Officers were sent to the 3200 block of Mt. Olivet St. on a report of shots fired last night at 9:33pm.  Officers discovered that there had been at least two people shooting at each other in the area however, everyone had fled prior to officers arrival.  Minutes later, a vehicle arrived at Borgess Hospital with a victim of a gunshot wound.

     

    The victim, a 19 year old Kalamazoo County resident, was pronounced dead at Borgess Hospital.  The investigation is being handled by the Criminal Investigations Division and further details will be released as they emerge.

  • Checkers Restaurant Robbed

    Kalamazoo:  Public Safety Officers were sent to the Checkers Restaurant at 575 E. Michigan Ave. at 8:09 this morning on a report of an armed robbery.  The restaurant manager was robbed while opening the business this morning by a subject armed with a handgun.  The restaurant manager was not injured during the robbery and the suspect fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.

     

    The suspect is described as a black male in his 20’s and about 6’3” tall, average build.  He was wearing a red over black hooded sweatshirt with white “Nike” lettering across the chest.  He was also wearing light colored pants with large cargo style pockets. The suspect was last seen fleeing on foot  northbound from the business.

  • Preferred Credit Union Robbery

    Kalamazoo:  The Preferred Credit Union at 4245 S. Westnedge Ave. was robbed this afternoon at 12:06 pm.  A lone black male entered the Credit Union and brandished a handgun demanding money.  There were no injuries during the robbery and the suspect was last seen on foot, northbound from the credit union.

     

    The suspect is described as a dark skinned black male, in his late 20’s or early 30’s, 165-175 lbs. and about 5’5” to 5’8” tall.  He was wearing a light colored short sleeve shirt and light colored sweatpants.  The suspect was also wearing white tennis shoes and possibly had dread locks in his hair.

  • Suspect in Robbery of Rite Aid Pharmacy Arrested

    Kalamazoo, MI:  Public Safety Officers were sent to the Rite Aid Pharmacy at 1032 E. Cork St. this morning at 10:25am on a report of an armed robbery.  Information was gathered that the suspect was a heavy set white male with a handgun.  An alert witness obtained information as the suspect fled the store and noted a vehicle description and a direction of travel.  Minutes later, Portage Police Officers located the vehicle driving southbound on U.S. 131 near Center St.  The vehicle was stopped and the suspect arrested without incident.  Evidence and a weapon were located inside the vehicle.

     

    The suspect, a 35 year old Three Rivers, MI resident was arrested for Armed Robbery and a weapons offense, he is currently lodged in the Kalamazoo County Jail awaiting arraignment.

  • 13 Year Old Killed on Kalamazoo South Side

    Kalamazoo, MI:  Public Safety Officers were sent to the area of Lay Blvd. and Race St. at 7:08pm on May 26th on a report of shots fired and a person was down.  Officers arrived on scene and found a 13 year old victim suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper torso.  The victim has been identified as Michael Day, age 13 of Kalamazoo.  Mr. Day was transported to Bronson Hospital where he was pronounced dead from his injury.

  • Update to Arrest in Child's Death

    Kalamazoo, MI:  On Thursday afternoon, Brian Keith Roberts, age 40 was arraigned in 8th District Court for the murder of Nehemiah Marcellus Dodd, age 2.  Mr. Roberts is the father of Nehemiah Dodd.

     

    Brian Keith Roberts is currently being lodged in the Kalamazoo County Jail for

    Homicide-Felony Murder and First Degree Child Abuse.  Mr. Roberts bond has been set at $250,000.

  • Arrest Made in Death of Child

    Kalamazoo, MI:  On December 31st, 2013, Public Safety Officers were sent to the 400 block of W. Frank St. on a report of an unconscious child, who was not breathing.  Officers conducted CPR on the 2 year old boy and he was transported to Bronson Hospital where he later died on January 2nd, 2014.

     

    Detectives conducted an investigation as to what occurred at the home on the night the child was injured and awaited results from the autopsy on the child.  On May 22nd, 2014, the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor’s Office issued a two count warrant for Homicide-Felony Murder and Child Abuse- First Degree against a 40 year old Kalamazoo resident.  The suspect was arrested by detectives this morning and is presently being lodged in the Kalamazoo County Jail awaiting arraignment.
